Threes Pieces

Threes Pieces Autism Awareness group started with three families coming together to bring awareness to autism in southeast Nebraska and help school districts find the educational tools and equipment to help children with special needs.

Born in 2012, Threes Pieces is a non-profit group in the Fairbury, Nebraska area, formed by three families with children on the autism spectrum to help promote autism awareness and provide support to families dealing with the diagnosis. The group is comprised of parents, grandparents, family members and friends of children who daily face the struggle of autism. Members of Threes Pieces advocate for the children affected by autism and their needs. They are also committed to helping parents and caregivers who require special equipment or educational resources.

Threes Pieces believes knowledge and awareness create power. No two children on the autism spectrum are alike, but once found, many options exist to thrive with this disorder. Statistically, 1 in 68 children is diagnosed with autism. Autism can be baffling since a child with autism looks “normal,” but his/her behavior will present perplexing and downright difficult situations for those in contact with the individual. This circle includes parents, grandparents, siblings, teachers, extended family and friends. Once labeled as an incurable disorder, this notion is crumbling with increased knowledge and understanding.

Involvement plays a huge role in the success of Threes Pieces. Members make a commitment to get out and talk about autism, raise funds, and support a variety of activities and events through participation. Some members participate in the Autism Speaks Walk in Lincoln, Nebraska, but the biggest awareness and advocacy project for Threes Pieces is its Light It Up Blue event, which began in 2012 and now attracts hundreds of participants. It is an afternoon of family entertainment with games, clowns, music, a Silent Auction, a raffle and more. Posters and information highlight the lesson that children with autism are no different than most, but how they learn socially and educationally is different.

In addition, Threes Piece spreads its message by encouraging businesses and individuals in Fairbury, Nebraska to use blue lights, paint their windows, hang signs, and decorate their businesses and homes in other ways for Light It Up Blue, thereby showing their support for autism awareness and care.

Threes Pieces promises to continue to advocate for children with autism until research can find the explanation and cure for this disorder. As it states, “We want autism put in the history books.”

If a child with autism could tell you how he/she feels it would be something like this,

“View my autism as a different ability rather than a disability. Look past what you may see as weaknesses and see my strengths. Watch how far I go in my life with your advocacy, guidance and love for me, just as I am.”
